Pisa is one of those cities everyone knows for its famous leaning tower but there is so much more to see and explore in this amazing place.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

Let's start with the main attraction, the Leaning Tower. When you first walk into the square you are drawn to its stunning beauty and architecture, the tower is one of three structures in the Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo).

The tower began to lean during construction in the 12th century, due to soft ground which could not properly support its weight. By 1990, the tilt had reached 5.5 degrees. The structure was stabilized by remedial work which was done between 1993 and 2001, and that reduced the tilt to 3.97 degrees.

You can climb the tower and get some amazing views of the surrounding area and square. But as with all popular attractions you have to be aware of the large crowds and queues at peak times of the year.

It is open in Summer between 8.30am to 10pm and in winter 10am to 6pm but do check as times can vary and change. Tickets for the Tower are at set times and limited in number, you must choose a time when you buy your ticket.

Pisa Cathedral: A Glimpse into Renaissance Splendor

Cathedral of Pisa (Santa Maria Assunta)
Cathedral of Pisa (Santa Maria Assunta)

In 1063 Pisa was one of the superpowers of the Mediterranean Sea and wanted a cathedral to match its power. This cathedral or the Duomo is a Romanesque masterpiece of white marble with black detailing and a cathedral filled with art.

Getting up close and touching the surface is surreal and beautiful at the same time. The great thing is admission is free but requires a time-slot reservation ticket. Opening times are normally 10am to 6pm but can change depending on the season.

Santa Maria Della Spina church
Santa Maria Della Spina

Pisa has many churches, but Santa Maria Della Spina is arguably the most beautiful and unique of them all. This tiny church has a detailed Gothic facade and a great setting on the riverbank.

Della Spina means ‘of the thorn’ as one of the thorns from Jesus’ thorn crown apparently once rested at this site.

Pisa has many hidden streets and walkways, especially along the stretch of the Arno River. Just explore the narrow alleyways and small squares and you will see many places to shop and eat and you can also marvel at the architecture all around you.

Pisa has so much more to offer than just the Leaning Tower, so when you visit for a long weekend or a week make the most of this great city and explore.
