If you are from the UK and wish to travel to Italy, British passport holders must register with the ETIAS to visit the country.

This rule will come into effect in 2025 when the visa waiver system is launched.

British citizens no longer enjoy the perks of EU membership after Brexit. They do not have the right to freedom of movement to Italy and other countries in the EU.

This means that UK citizens must take certain steps when planning a trip.

The ETIAS for Italy is designed to be easy to use. The system is completed online.

Brits can get their travel authorisation from the comfort of their own home or office.

It can be accessed from any, phone, computer or device with an internet connection.

Once approved, the ETIAS visa waiver for citizens of the UK will be valid for 3 years.

They will be able to visit Italy as many times as they want during this period.

This visa exemption applies to visits of up to 90 days within any 180 days. The visits must be for tourism or business purposes.

From 2025, British travellers will have to register with the ETIAS to continue to enjoy this exemption. The ETIAS is not a visa but a waiver that will allow visa-free travel.

People applying must meet the ETIAS Italy requirements for British citizens.

British travellers must ensure that their passport meets the following criteria before booking their trip to Italy:

  • Issued within the last 10 years
  • Valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from Italy
  • Issued by the United Kingdom or another visa waiver country

This does not apply to Brits with dual Italian citizenship, they may travel freely to Italy using their Italian passport.

British citizens can no longer use the EU fast-track lanes at passport control. They must now use the lanes for arrivals from third countries. This may mean waiting slightly longer to clear immigration.

British travellers who are aware of the changes and make plans accordingly will be able to experience the most beautiful places in Italy and enjoy a stress-free trip.
